Movie time! Watch this mormon messages clip for your attention getter.
Talk about the family and it’s purposes. Read through The Family: A Proclamation to the World and let the Spirit lead the discussion.
This is the hard part – based on Elder Baxter’s talk about single parents. While single parents are sometimes widows or widowers, in today’s world most of the single parents your kids know will be divorced. Discussing divorce with children can be a tricky thing. Whether you come from a broken home or whether you are simply explaining it, it’s a sensitive topic and I can see how it could confuse children.
This is how I would explain it to my daughter if she were old enough to understand: Heavenly Father loves all of us and he wants us to make good decisions and be married for time and eternity in the temple. That’s what we want you to aspire to; but we live in a fallen world, and sometimes people make mistakes. Just because someone is divorced or because their parents are divorced doesn’t make them bad people. Heavenly Father loves us and wants us to treat each other well, no matter what our family circumstances are.
This is one of my favorite singers and one of my favorite songs. It’s called Family Tree, and I think it would be a good song to listen to and discuss during this family home evening lesson.
